Re: packages not working Hi all;
Sorry about the absence. I've been kept busy by work, and things haven't been fun for the last while here on my end.
I know there's about 3 or 4 out standing tickets on this matter, so to save time for everyone (well, mainly for myself), I'm writing one single response to address the problem here for everyone else to read.
Repo.sc does not work for Installer 4 right now. This doesn't change, because I have not had the time to convert the code to work with the new repositories yet, and RiPDev have not finalized the format either. I will take a week off work and update repo.sc's code when they finalize the format. This should address two of the tickets that's sitting in the queue...
Repo.sc is designed to be a search engine / portal. We have 62 sources in our database right now. We take information about their packages, and record the information into our database. We do not actually store any of the packages' zips, or other medias. What this means is when you are accessing the package (IE: installing them on your iPhone / iPod Touch), you still go to the original place and get the original package.
As we progress towards Firmware 2.x (rumors have it that we'll see 2.2 later this month), people are progressively phasing out 1.x repositories. We're seeing smaller repositories shut down, and larger repositories making their transition towards 2.x format. Unfortunately, this means one of two things:
1) When people trying to access those that are no longer available, there will be download errors.
2) When people trying to access those that are updated, the old Installer will not be able to understand the new format.
So, what can you do about this problem?
Unfortunately, not much. You can try Cydia, which uses a well established format, and doesn't have this kind of stupid "let's change the repository format to kill all backwards compatability" problem. However, you might very quickly find yourself unable to install applications because the developers are no longer releasing / maintaining the 1.x series of applications.
Alternatively, you may want to update your firmware to 2.x, and use the new Installer (you may find yourself no longer needing an external service such as repo.sc, too). Don't forget, if you're using an iPhone, you SHOULD update using a hacked firmware image, so you do not upgrade your baseband. There is, as of right now, no baseband unlock for the new 3G baseband, and I do not know if there is one for the 2.x firmware baseband for original iPhone.
Hope this wraps up the questions for everyone. If you still have any questions or concerns, please post in here, and I'll try to answer them as soon as I can. |
