I am asking that same question. I have a lot of sources right now, so it refreshes pretty slow. However, I don't want to delete them all and try repo.sc before I know exactly what it does, because then I'd lose all my sources. Can someone help me out?

pennymac:
Glad to see you have it working

richan90:
It's simple, actually. In really over simplified way to explain it:
1) repo.sc have installer running on a server.
2) repo.sc keeps track of packages from the 40 some sources we currently track, see: http://www.touchtoolset.com/repo-sou...d-sources.html (more is added over time)
3) You pick and choose from repo.sc's list of packages: Touch Toolset - repo.sc
4) You add your personalized source ( get it from Touch Toolset - Your Repo Link ) to installer (and remove the 40 some sources we currently track)
5) Your installer shows only the packages you selected, and you load 40 some lesser sources, making installer run quickly
6) Because repo.sc's installer runs every 10 minutes, and checks selected sources (it spreads out the 40 some sources over an hour period), your personalized source will also be updated when new packages are made available; see: Touch Toolset - repo.sc - Recently Updated Packages

Well, I understand I can add packages individually, but what is the use when I have to go back to this site and manually select which packages I want, install them, and then I have no use for them anymore (because they're installed). I'd like being able to add full sources/repos to repo.sc, so I can actually browse them while I'm mobile, and pick programs I want from my touch from time to time. I don't know if this makes sense, but is adding full repos/sources possible, instead of just single packages?

This was actually discussed several times before, and have always been interesting disucssions.

From a usability stand-point, it is both good and bad to add full source to personalized repo. It is good, because you don't need to manually navigate through to find the package you want on the website (search can help with that to some extent: Touch Toolset - Search Packages ), but it is bad because you now have everything from that source in your installer, and you'd need to flick through some times pages and pages of packages to find the one package that you want.

From a server resources point of view, it adds a lot of overhead when checking sources, and adds a package. Take for example Ste Packaging. It is litterally the largest repository, with over 272 packages, everyone would be interested to have at least something on there. As of right now, we have just over 1300 users; if even just 10% of the users request to have the entire repository added to their repo, when the crawler running in the background keeping track of new packages and what not runs, it needs to update 130 users' records. I am sure as we proceed on with more feature developments, and better success with Apple selling more iPod Touch / iPhones, we'll see even more users, which will just make the resource requirements even more ridiculous.

As result of both of the above reasons, a simpler compromise is temporarily put in place. This is the recently introduced RSS feed system. When you're on repo.sc sections (you'll notice "/repo.sc/" as part of the URL), you have extra RSS feed options available -- one if you're not logged in, for updates and additions of all packages on our service; two if you're logged in, an extra one for just updates on packages you've selected. These RSS feeds can be added to the Mobile RSS program, and you can visit the site quickly to the updates page, where you can login (if you've not already done so) and tap the add package option.

In the future, after the small "break" from development I'm having -- as mentioned here: No updates in next week or two. -- and after I am done developing the social components, I have planned for webapp version of the site, where you can easily manage your packages directly from your iPod Touch / iPhones, too.

Bare in mind that I'm still a post secondary student -- this excuse will be gone soon as I'm graduating in a few months -- and don't have the resources like Google, I cannot possibly do absoultely everything. As such, I believe that the compromise of coming to website and update your repo once every now and then is a reasonable trade-off to ease off the 5, 10, or even upwards to 20 to 40 minutes wait just to start off Installer

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I'm the kind of person that doesn't exactly know which apps I need or want until I browse them, so I think this method wouldn't suit me very well. Again, thanks for taking time to explain

No problem at all. Before I lose you though -- darn, I sound like a car sales person, hehe -- I'm working on a new feature which should help browsing for applications down the road to be much more friendly, especially for people like you :P

Here's the proposed design interface, which I've linked in the other thread above: Touch Toolset - repo.sc

The idea is so that community members, much like yourself, can have a good idea of what packages are good / bad / usable, and what it is in more detail than just the small blurp on installer. Of course, this will all be search-able at some point in time. This would in turn not only make locating that really obscure app that much easier, but also make package locating much more community driven.

I'll check back for updates frequently. Your site, I'm sure, is a great resource for a lot of people. It just doesn't fit my needs at the moment However, I'm will use it as a backup in case I need to restore.

Ok, I'm having the same problem. I'm supposed to add the link of my personalized link, right? Well nothing is showing up and I added at least 8 packages. I did read your reply saying something about deleting some sources that I already have, but wasn't quite sure what you meant by that. So delete all the sources I currently have?
